President Kibaki Visits Winning KEMRI Stand at the Mombasa Show

KEMRI’ s maiden appearance at the Mombasa International Show was rewarded with a visit by the Head of State and two awards for the Best Mosquito & Malaria Control at the Coast Region and the Best Stand in Research & Development Projects.

The president was accompanied by the Minister for Public Health, Hon Beth Mugo as well as  the Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Sally Kosgey Minister for Gender,  Children and Youth Affairs, Hon. Naomi Shaaban, Internal Security Assistant Minister Hon. Orwa Ojode, National Chairman of the ASK Show, Mrs. Alice Kalya and senior government officials.

The KEMRI Board of Management Chairman, Dr. Edwin Muinga Chokwe, KEMRI Board members Mr. Henzlon Waithaka,  Amb. Leonard Ngaithe and the Director KEMRI, Dr. Solomon Mpoke were at hand to receive the Head of State’s delegation alongside other senior officials from KEMRI. These included Ms Linah Boit, Deputy Director (Finance and Administration), head of the KEMRI Centre for Geographic Medicine (CGMRC) Dr. Omar Sabah, Prof. Kevin Marsh, the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Scientific Team leader, Ms Ann Wang’ombe Head, Human Resource, Dr. Charles Mwandawiro Assistant Director (Partnerships and collaborations), and Ms. Agatha Osidiana, Head of Corporate Affairs.

Dr Mpoke acknowledged the contributions from the KEMRI Board of Management, KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Programme, the KEMRI-CDC Programme and all staff for making the event successful and memorable to the Institute.

Some of the winning exhibits from Kilifi came from the Entomology Cluster, the Kilifi Epilepsy Education Program (KEEP), the Lab Department, the Community Liaison Group,the Clinical Trials Facility, the Malaria Vaccine Trial and the Cotrimoxazole Prophylaxis study in malnutrition.
