The Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System
Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System (KHDSS) is a population framework linked real-time with hospital morbidity surveillance and longitudinal community-based cohort studies. It covers an area of 891km2 and a resident population of 260,000 (March 2011). It aims at defining rates of mortality, fertility and migration over time, evaluating the impact of health interventions of national public health importance, as well as, providing data for epidemiological studies of diseases of local importance.
The KHDSS became a full member of the INDEPTH Network of demographic surveillance sites in 2005.
Basic demographic data, ethnicity, household structure and location are collected for new structures/residents and updated for existing structures/residents every 3-4 months.
