Global scientists gather to share information on typhoid fever, related fevers
Global scientists and health professionals gather to share latest information on typhoid fever, related fevers and the mass introduction of a typhoid vaccine
Typhoid fever is a global health problem. The real impact of the disease is difficult to assess because the disease is often confused with other similar fevers and due to resource constraints in developing countries.
Major initiatives being carried out to fight typhoid include public health education, improving sanitation and provision of clean water. The international scientific community is now opening a new warfront by making the mass introduction of a typhoid vaccine high priority.
The Seventh International Symposium on Typhoid Fever and other invasive Salmonelloses is being held in Africa for the first time and brings together scientists, clinicians, public health professionals, immunization leaders, vaccine industry representatives and members of the donor community to Kilifi, Kenya from 25-28 January, 2009.
The symposium's goal is to share the latest scientific information on progress with vaccines for public health use. Latest research results, trials of new vaccines, and issues of vaccine introduction will be presented.
The target audience will be policy makers, national public health and financial authorities, national immunization program managers, pediatric and infectious disease societies, scientists, researchers, bilateral and multilateral development and financial agencies, and other partners involved in supporting immunization programs.
The conference will be officially opened by Mark Bor, C.B.S, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation on Sunday 25 January, 2009 at 5pm at Mnarani Club, Kilifi.
The symposium is being sponsored by Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), World Health Organisation (W.H.O), Wellcome Trust, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Sanofi-Pasteur and Novartis.
