Anthony Scott leads a programme of research studying invasive bacterial disease, principally pneumococcal disease. He leads a large scale vaccine intervention study investigating the effectiveness of 7-valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine. His studies are conducted in the Kilifi District of Kenya and more recently new sites have been established across the country. Pneumococcus causes as many childhood deaths as malaria and Anthony's research covers the aetiology of pneumonia, diagnosis, natural immunity, evaluation of vaccines and transmission of pneumococci.
