The clinical trials facility was established to provide technical support for implementation of clinical trials that must meet the international GCP and regulatory standards. The Facility was thus set up to ensure that all studies qualifying to be be called clinical trials are planned and executed up to the good clinical practices (GCP) standards. To achieve this, a structure with trial expertise was necessary including senior scientific staff, paediatricians, study coordinators, nurses, clinical data management, Internal monitors, clinical laboratories, logisticians and field workers.
With this set up, the clinical trials facility is presently running 13 GCP standard clinical trials and actively planning to start another 5 during 2009. These range from pharmaceurical compnay sponsored drug/vaccine trials to internally driven academic trials where our programme takes responsibility as sponsor/investigator. As head of clinical trials, Dr. Roma Chilengi is responsible for oversight, planning and day to day management, strategic planning and implementation of the projects.
