Samuel Akech
Research
Sam Akech is registered for Doctor of Philosophy (Dphil) in Clinical Medicine at University Oxford, UK since September 2007. He is supervised by Prof. Kathryn Maitland (KEMRI/Wellcome Trust and Imperial College, London, UK) and Dr Brian Angus (Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Oxford, UK). The major focus of his studies, which are all based at Kilifi, is in the area of clinical diagnosis and management of children with severe infectious illnesses and fluid depletion. He aims to determine ways of improving clinical diagnosis of children with fluid depletion in resource poor settings. His work builds on a programme of work that has been going on within the Kilifi unit on the management of severe childhood diseases. Sam graduated with Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MChB) from Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya in 2002. Before joining the programme, he worked with the government during his one-year internship and as a medical officer.
