Simon Brooker
Research
Simon is a Reader in Tropical Epidemiology and Disease Control at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and currently holds a Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellowship, joining the Nairobi unit in January 2008. Simon's research interests include the spatial epidemiology of parasitic diseases, including helminth infections and malaria, with a specific focus on the use of geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and spatial modelling as tools for mapping and predicting the infection distributions, and targeting control. His latest research focuses on: a) the epidemiology of co-infection with malaria and hookworm; and b) malaria in schools, within frameworks of infection mapping, disease burden estimation and tailoring control options. Simon is deputy editor of the open access journal, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, and is a currently member of a WHO working group on neglected tropical disease monitoring and evaluation; the Technical Advisory Board of the Partnership for Child Development; and the Mebendazole Advisory Committee of Children Without Worms. Simon has a first degree in Human Sciences and a doctorate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from the University of Oxford, and a Master's in Health Economics from City University, London. Before joining LSHTM in 2002, Simon held research appointments at the University of Oxford and Imperial College, London.
