Susan Morpeth
Research
Dr Susan Morpeth is a Clinical Microbiologist and Infectious Diseases Physician, who joined the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme in January 2009. She is interested in pneumonia, invasive bacterial disease, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular diagnostics, quality assurance and capacity-building. Susan is about to start a PhD on understanding the spread of pneumococcal infection from healthy carriage to invasive disease. As well as running the microbiology laboratory in Kilifi and acting as Biosafety officer for the programme, Susan travels regularly to Thika to advise on the microbiology laboratory in the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Impact Study project there. In Kilifi, Susan has been involved in the setting up of the category 3 Tuberculosis laboratory, and is now expanding the programme's molecular laboratory capacity into bacteriology.
