Outpatient strategy of Ready to Use Supplementary Food (RUSF) for malnourished children

Full Title:
A randomized trial of an outpatient strategy of Ready to Use Supplementary Food (RUSF) among moderately malnourished children following acute infection.
Principal Investigator(s):
Jay Berkley

Acute infection is a key point of vulnerability where children's growth may falter, leading to increased susceptibility to further infection and death. RUSF is a pre-cooked, lipid-rich paste that includes essential protein, energy, fatty acids and micronutrients. It is produced in Nairobi in collaboration with Valid Nutrition and is inexpensive. The primary aims are to determine effectiveness on growth, infectious morbidity, inflammatory markers and immune activation of a short-term home-based supplementation strategy.
